June 10, 2010 by Scott Davis

Let's Talk Social - Cancelled

How Sweet to be Tweet by You!

June 6, 2010 by Scott Davis

So like a lot of other people who post articles on their blogs, we all know how much work it takes, especially if you are trying to come up with original content all the time. I keep track of Google Analytics for all my clients as well as this scottpdavis.com site to see if what gets said makes a difference. Adding a poll, adding a video, changing a picture or changing the headline, it amazes me what can effect the readership or ReTweets of an article.

But nothing effects that stat more than an influenser, a person with clout, twitter credibility a big hitter. I just wanted to share with you the difference that one Tweet can make to the outcome of a blog post. This site on average will see less than 20 people a day visit (I THANK YOU very much if you are one of those people who in the past has). On Friday I posted and article entitled Careful what you Tweet on #Twitter . As of Friday a few people had read the article nothing more or less than normal.

Conclusion:

  • Don’t give up with posting article even if you do not have many people ReTweeting or sharing articles
  • Use Google Analytics
  • You never know who is reading you articles
  • Headlines do make a difference

Careful what you Tweet on Twitter

June 4, 2010 by Scott Davis

Good Tweet Bad TweetSo we all have a laugh and a joke on Twitter from time to time. Sometimes people do tweet something that is not about Twitter itself or Social Media…. yes it can happen. But perhaps Paul Chambers went a little too far, or forgot to press the delete after.

Chambers was found guilty in May of sending a message of a “menacing character” under the Communications Act 2003 after he tweeted in frustration in January at the closure of Robin Hood airport, near Doncaster, U.K. owing to snow. “Crap! Robin Hood airport is closed. You’ve got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I’m blowing the airport sky high!” he wrote, frustrated that his plans for a flight to Ireland looked like being thwarted.

After being arrested by police, and fined $2000, he is appealing the conviction.

“I would never have thought, in a thousand years, that any of this would have happened because of a Twitter post. I’m the most mild-mannered guy you could imagine,” Chambers said after the initial verdict. Chambers admitted that his tweet was “silly” but called the police reaction “absurd”, saying his tweet was “like having a bad day at work and stating that you could murder your boss” and that “I didn’t even think about whether it would be taken seriously.”

I am Canadian

June 2, 2010 by Scott Davis

Let’s start with the classic “ I am Canadian”

Well my name may not be Joe, but last week after living here in Kelowna for 21 years I took the Canadian Citizenship oath with 47 other New Canadians from over 24 different Countries. You can say that this truly was a real international social event.

A couple of the highlights of the event was to have Local dignitaries there for Federal, Provincial and Local representation.  On behalf of Mayor Sharon Shepherd was Kelowna Social Media superstar @Kevin_Craig, who got up and talked about his own tale of coming from Ireland and what it meant to him to become a Canadian and what Canada has as to offer as a country. I think he also played up on his Irish accent, but I have to admit he spoke eloquently and with a great message for any Canadian New or born here.

Furthermore what was also a real treat was to fire up my Twitter account and to find an overwhelming amount of congratulations from people all over the world that I have met via Social Media circles over the last year.

It is this connection via Twitter or myspace or Linkedin or re-connections via Facebook of friends and new friends that have driven Social Media to the incredible mass it has become today

So in Canadian spirit I wanted to take the time today to list Ten Canadian people/icons/organizations that are using Social media for good or interesting things.

Canadians rocking Social

1. Justin Bieber – Hometown Stratford, Ontario

http://www.JUSTINBIEBERMUSIC.com
http://www.BIEBERFEVER.com
http://www.twitter.com/justinbieber 2,822,877 people following
http://www.youtube.com/justinbieber
http://www.youtube.com/kidrauhl
http://www.facebook.com/justinbieber 4,545,873 people following
http://www.myspace.com/justinbieber
http://ilike.com/artist/Justin+Bieber

I know the kid is not everyone’s favorite, and yes he has a massive team behind him. But he does do most of his own updates to his Social Media Streams (unlike say Britney Spears). He has become a Global Canadian Icon, and not just through his music but for his personality that comes across. And as you mentioned last week you can remove him entirely from your online experience with the Firefox Shaved Bieber application J

2. Stephen Harper

Yes folks your friendly Canadian Prime Minister is on Twitter, with a healthy following and does his own tweets, not many of them 249 at this time. But definitely demonstrates he gets the social part.

My favorite : US Ambassador Jacobson delivered 2 cases of beer to 24 Sussex today to settle the Olympic hockey bet. http://twitpic.com/19jcpr

Also using Youtube to fullest when he invited people to submit questions that he would answer live via a streaming feed. With an impressive 240,000 views

Canadian Organizations

3. The Canadian Diabetes Association.

It was pointed out to all of the New 47 Canadians that a group of Canadians Banting, Best, Collip and Macloed from Toronto University in 1921 are responsible for saving countless numbers of lives through the discovery of Insulin.

The Canadian Diabetes Association continues the great work today and is using social Media platforms to their best to increase awareness and also fundraise.

Please go check out their Flicker account to see photo’s that have been uploaded by people at events. You get a great feeling of Canadian patriotism and community caring.

4. David Suzuki (foundation)

As the host of CBC’s The Nature of Things and the author of more than 30 books, David Suzuki a Vancouverite mixing education with entertainment. The passionate Suzuki has earned a well-deserved reputation as an environmental guru for two generations of Canadians. Although the foundation runs much of his Social Media, his Facebook Page is a fairly personal page and worth supporting

5. CBC news

Well we talked about this last week that content is key to Social Media, And that perhaps the Main stream Media still has more to say than we think. And what better than Canadian News Anchor the CBC. Over the last year they have worked hard in keeping up. I think big Kudos and shout out to this incredible team for their coverage of the Olympics earlier this year. Streaming coverage of events was awesome, and they continue to do so with more and more shows.

If you are not following her, which is fairly unlikely I suggest you do.

Week 18-Crying out for content

May 25, 2010 by Scott Davis

[wpaudio url=”http://LetsTalkSocial.com/wp-content/uploads/Audio/Week18.mp3″ text=”Week 18″ dl=”0″ autoplay=”1″]

cry out for contentI am always a big fan of studies, because I hope they are based on Facts and they can affirm or deny our conception of something.

The latest report from the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, “New Media, Old Media findings.” More than 99% of the stories linked to in blogs came from legacy outlets such as newspapers and broadcast networks. And just four – the BBC, CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post accounted for fully 80% of all links.”

According to the study, there was no original news at all on Twitter. “Here half (50%) of the links were to legacy outlets; 40% went to web-only news sources such as Mashable and CNET. The remaining 10% went to wire stories or non-news sources…”

I have to say there is a lot of regurgitated “stuff” out there. I think most people who have used twitter for any period of time would agree. Also now with Facebook making suggestions and recommendations of things you may like it is only encouraging re-hash after re-hash.  We all know that this is true of the Music industry it seems at the moment. We have artists covering the cover of the mashup up of the re-mix cover.

So what does this mean, to us? Should we stop using Facebook for this reason as well as some of its privacy policy issues? Should we stop Re-tweeting what people are saying cause its old news that someone just dragged out of the Newspaper.

Well I think we can all agree on another thing that Social Media is here to stay, so what it really need is content. Good new content, and this is where business and organizations of all kinds can win out.

But I will say immediately that content building can seem like a daunting undertaking. Image what it must be like to be a Radio talk show host and you have 2hrs of content to fill everyday. New topics, try to maintain interest from a diverse listener base. No easy task. You have to have the gift of the Gab correct?

Well when it comes to content for you to promote your business or organization, who better than you. You are the expert the one with the knowledge, the person who has all the content up in your head. You don’t have to have the gift of the Gab you already have the blood sweat and tears of putting a company together. And believe it or not that is the kind of content people want to know about. And you usually don’t have to worry about trying to keep the attention of 1000 of people; you are just concerned about your demographic that buys your product and service. And the other good thing about that is that they are usually looking for you.

Getting your business involved in Social Media should not be jumped into with out a strategy and I recommend you mix it in with any other form of advertising you may be doing.  But the nice part is you can get involved for a low cost, but you will have to throw some time, effort and download some of that great material that is in your head down onto paper and then down on to the web. If you are not a big keyboard fanatic than grab a video camera and upload to Youtube.

The same study that mentioned no content was original, did lead on to say that any non-mainstream media content that was talked about online was viewed originally via YouTube.

The great thing about you adding original content is that Mainstream Media are also looking for it. Reports scan through the web the same way we do looking for a story to fill that 2hr radio segment and yes you could be the one who is adding value to their show and your business.

Men and our “Nothing Box”

May 24, 2010 by Scott Davis

True account of why when you ask a guy what he’s thinking he states “Nothing”, because he is actually not thinking about anything.

My wife reminded me about this, i had forgotten about it, what does that tell you.

What’s in a name anyway?

May 24, 2010 by Scott Davis

baby name bibleSo throw out that old tradition of naming your child after great grandfather (George) or Religious Saint (Paul), or hey even after the place you conceived the child (Vegas). Just bang up a Facebook page and competition and Bob’s your Uncle (or Twitter is).

Jenn and Joe Marsh struggling to come up with a name for child Number 5 decided to put it out there to Facebook friends.
“within 20 minutes I had 40 or 50 replies,” Jenn said. “Then, within a day and a half, I had 500.”

The online contest attracted attention from their local newspaper, then television and radio stations all over the country. Their story spread around the world. In the end they received 1,000 suggestions from Canada, the U.S., England, New Zealand, Yugoslavia, Norway, Indonesia — from schoolkids to seniors.

So, Scout (yes you have read this correctly) Megan Marie Marsh was born April 19 in hospital in Chatham, near the family’s farm in Thamesville, Ont.,weighing 9 lb., 13 oz.

Best wishes to baby Scout and family ( I am sure we will see more of you dancing to Beyonce or something). All I can say is it is going to be a strange first day at Kindergarten.
